Microblading at the Pear – FAQs!

By now, you have probably heard the news – The Gilded Pear offers microblading! This blog is your one-stop shop to get all of your microblading questions answered when you book with us!

What is Microblading?

Microblading is also known by a variety of names such as eyebrow embroidery and microstroking. It is a form of semi-Permanent makeup meant to partially or fully camouflage missing eyebrow hair using very fine deposits of cosmetic tattoo pigments. Each microblading stroke is applied by a professional technician individually. Due to the intricacy of the microblading’s specialized application, it allows for the full control of your eyebrows’ shape, color and density according to your personal preferences.

It is important to realize that microblading is a type of tattoo. Pigment is deposited into the upper layers of the skin so as to make the pigment last, and even though these pigments will likely fade, they are still a tattoo. The microblading tattoo, as with all other kinds of tattoos, will fade depending on the pigment used, the environment and skincare products used for maintenance on a regular basis.

What happens during a treatment?

The treatment is typically a 2 step application process: the initial appointment which includes consultation and initial application and the second appointment (approximately six weeks later) to touch up and ensure longevity of the colors used. The 2nd application ensures that the micro-pigments are healing properly and responding well.

The treatment begins with developing the desired shape for your eyebrows, then using individual tattoo strokes or ‘feathers’ in the area to plot the shape and style requested. The color choice is specific to your preferences and skin tone. It is mixed using a natural selection of micropigments to complement your style and look.

Immediately post treatment, your eyebrows will most likely appear a bit darker than expected, but fear not as they will fade by 50% during the healing process over the following 2 weeks. Just be prepared to budget yourself this appropriate time and refrain from booking your microblading too close to important occasions and photography sessions. You should also refrain from booking any vacations or excessive sun exposure for at least one month after your treatment.

Do I need to do anything to prepare for my treatment?

Ideally no. In fact, it is not recommended that you tweeze, pluck, thread, wax or modify your eyebrows in any way for at least two weeks prior to your appointment. Shaping will be part of your microblading treatment and should be done your practitioner. Only after your brows have healed over the two weeks following your treatment should regular maintenance techniques then be applied.

If you have specific ideas in mind about how you would like your brows to look, please bring a couple of reference images on your phone or in print to your consultation appointment.

Will I feel anything?

A local anesthetic is applied in order to the numb the area for the procedure and in order to mitigate any discomfort you may feel. Be aware that individual levels of sensitivity vary and while most clients notice that the procedure is no less tolerable than a regular tweezing, threading or waxing treatment, your individual tolerance may be less depending on a few factors. Regular smokers should be aware that topical anesthetics tend not to work for as long as clients who do not smoke. Additionally, if you suffer with fibromyalgia, the sensitivity tolerance of your skin will be dependent on your condition.

How long does it last?

Microblading typically lasts between 6 – 18 months if proper aftercare instructions are observed to the best of your abilities. In order to keep the color and look of your microblading crisp, a touch-up service is required up to every 2 years depending on your skin and how well it holds the applied pigment.

Factors which might affect your microblading include: sun exposure (which can soften the look of your pigmentation); exfoliation and skincell regeneration; pigment colour choice (lighter colours tend to fade faster); and bleeding during the procedure. Bleeding can be mitigated by avoiding caffeine, alcohol and certain medications (if possible) at least 24 hours prior to the procedure. Be sure to not pick or rub the healing area to ensure that you do not aggravate your skin. Additionally, avoiding extreme heat, sweating and public sources of water, such as steam rooms, saunas, hot tubs and swimming pools, is best.

Can anyone do microblading?

Microblading is not available to minors (youth under the age of 18) at this time. Additionally, we do not perform microblading on pregnant or nursing individuals. Please note that it is extremely important to notify your doctor or technician if you plan to go for a chemical peel, MRI, laser treatments or other medical procedures after you have done microblading. Microblading involves iron-oxide tattoos which can be turned black by laser tattooing or can dramatically interfere with other procedures mentioned above.

Why You Really Shouldn’t Skip Your Mani-Pedi

One of the most exposed places on your body is your nails. All year-round, your fingernails are exposed to the elements (except when they are buried in your winter gloves) and whether your toenails are showing in summer sandals or are buried away in your winter boots, they too can get some serious wear and tear if not properly taken care of.

Manicures and pedicures do not only take care of the appearance of your nails – making them look polished, uniform and clean – they also contribute to the health of your nails by preventing breakage and a host of other issues associated with a lack of nail maintenance.

Regular treatments help to prevent or eradicate common nail ailments such as ingrown nails, fungus, thickened nails, brittle nails, curved nails and damage caused by the incorrect use of false nails or excessive nail biting. By keeping nails filed and smooth, trimmed to a reasonable length and covered in fortifying polishes, manicures and pedicures prevent breakage that can lead to the above-mentioned issues.

Additionally, these nail treatments go through an important process that benefits you in other ways. Exfoliating treatments during the mani-pedi will slough of dead skin cells, smoothing the surfacing of the skin and actually stimulating the regeneration of the skin. Calluses and uneven areas, particularly on the bottom of the feet, are also removed during the process of a pedicure which can help improve aches and pains caused by an uneven areas on the feet.

Massage and moisturizing of the cuticles and skin provide nourishment to the skin while simultaneously being relaxing, re-energizing and relieving aches and pains in the calves, ankles, wrists and forearms.

Keep in mind that manicure and pedicures are not only beneficial for women but can be really important for men to maintain and upkeep the health of their nails as well. Sports mani-pedis for both men and women also help keep your nails trim while you trim your waistline too – helping your nails to stay healthy but out of the way while you hit the gym!

The Gilded Pear’s Microdermabrasion for Smooth, Youthful Skin

Microdermabrasion is a general term for the application of tiny rough grains to buff away the surface layer of skin. Many different products and treatments use this method, including medical procedures, salon treatments and creams and scrubs that you apply yourself at home. It’s usually done to the face, chest, neck, arms or hands. Before we can understand how microdermabrasion does what it does, it’s important to understand how skin works.

Your skin is made up of two main layers, the epidermis and the dermis. The epidermis is the layer closest to the outside world. It’s a set of dead skin cells on top of another layer of cells that are in the process of maturing. The topmost layer is called the stratum corneum. The stratum corneum mostly acts as a barrier between the outside world and the lower skin layers. It keeps all but the smallest molecules from getting through.

When you put lotions or creams on your skin, some of the moisture passes through the stratum corneum, but not all of it. This layer is home to many minor skin imperfections like fine wrinkle lines and blemishes.

All of the action in microdermabrasion takes place at the level of the stratum corneum. Since it only really targets the epidermis (and not the dermis), it is more accurate to call it micro-epi-dermabrasion. Affecting deeper layers of skin would be painful and harmful, and it would risk permanently embedding the tiny grains into the skin.

This process has a few beneficial effects. With the stratum corneum gone, the skin’s surface is improved. The healing process brings with it newer skin cells that look and feel smoother. Some of the skin’s visible imperfections, like sun damage, blemishes and fine lines, are removed. Also, without the stratum corneum acting as a barrier, medicinal creams and lotions are more effective because more of their active ingredients and moisture can find their way down to the lower layers of skin. As microdermabrasion temporarily removes some moisture from the skin, it is always followed by the application of moisturizing creams.

What is Photo Rejuvenation at The Gilded Pear?

Photo Rejuvenation or photorejuvenation (also known as photofacials) effectively treats red and brown dyschromia/hyperpigmentation and facial telangiectasia while improving the skin’s texture and tone. Our process allows us to accurately target your skin concern revealing visible results in as little as 1-3 treatments spaced at 4 weeks apart. Photorejuvenation is used for a variety of skin concerns and used not only to correct skin imperfections such as freckles and sun spots, but to improve the overall skin complexion.

Photo Rejuvenation effectively treats:

• Facial Telangiectasia
• Rosacea
• Hyperpigmentation
• Age spots/sun spots
• Diffused redness and small facial capillaries
• Uneven skins and dull complexions
• Fine lines and mild scarring
• Overall skin appearance

Immediately following your photofacial, photorejuvenation or photo rejuvenation treatment, brown spots/discolourations will start to darken and your skin may appear slightly pink. This typically lasts a few hours to possibly a few days. During a time span of one to three weeks post your photofacial treatment, the darkened spots will flake off and/or fade and facial capillaries or diffused redness will decrease.

Before beginning photo rejuvenation treatments at The Gilded Pear, we encourage all clients to visit us for a complimentary photo rejuvenation skin consultation. At this time we will analyze your skin and provide recommendations for which treatments are best for you based on your skin’s needs and your personal goals for your skin.

When you come in for your first photo rejuvenation or photorejuvenation treatment, we will begin by cleansing the skin. The face is mapped out or divided in small sections to ensure even coverage. Goggles are placed over the client’s eyes for safety. A thin layer of gel is applied to the skin. The photo rejuvenation hand piece is applied to the skin one pulse at a time. You will feel a sharp pinch with every photorejuvenation pulse.

Cellulite Elimination and Body Contouring at The Gilded Pear

Body contouring and cellulite elimination are now a possibility with treatments at The Gilded Pear. We use the Lumicell Wave 6 machine to create amazing results in a relatively short period of time.

Cellulite is a common skin condition experienced by most post-pubertal women, as a result of imbalance between the formation and elimination of fat in the body, most commonly in the thigh and buttock areas. Much gender specific fat deposition is based upon hormonal receptor site density and sensitivity in different body regions. Unfortunately, good diet and physical exercise conditioning do not effectively prevent the development of cellulite.

The Gilded Pear is proud to introduce the revolutionary technology in cellulite treatment with Lumicell Wave 6, the next generation of Lumicell Touch, which provides a complete epidermic, dermic, and hypodermic solution to eliminate cellulite. The Lumicell Wave 6 offers superior cellulite treatments through a method that not only addresses beauty, but also well-being and complete body relaxation. It is inspired by energy treatments that eliminate muscular and vascular tension and release vital energies.

What causes cellulite?

Cellulite develops in different stages, each increasingly influenced by estrogen hormones, poor circulation, water retention, increased fat cells, and loss of skin elasticity.

Can diet and exercise get rid of this unsightly problem?

Although diet and exercise are useful in reducing body weight, they have very little impact on cellulite. Since cellulite develops in different layers of skin, a combination of approaches is required to successfully reach and address cellulite at each specific layer.

lumicell 2What are the different stages and how can I recognize them?

Cellulite is classified into four categories

  • Stage 1: “Orange Peel” appearance visible only when pinching the skin
  • Stage 2: “Orange Peel” appearance visible without pinching the skin
  • Stage 3: ”Mattress-like” or “Dimpling” appearance, impaired circulation
  • Stage 4: All of the above in addition to A loss of skin elasticity causing fat clusters, rippling effect, and vascular problems such as spider veins and bruising

The Lumicell Wave 6 is the only cellulite management system that combines the finest technologies to successfully target all cellulite-related problems:

  • Heavy legs
  • Orange peel appearance
  • Dimpling of the skin
  • Rippling of the inner thighs
  • Localized fat deposits
  • Skin contour irregularities

Lumicell Wave 6 combines 4 non-invasive technologies, working together in synergy to target all cellulite related problems, body remodelling and drainage needs.

  • Photo-Pneumatic Massage: Pneumatic Massage
  • Infrared light 900nm
  • 1 MHz Ultrasound
  • Bipolar Radiofrequency
  • Needle Free Mesotherapy (optional)

Pneumatic Massage:

  • The skin is suctioned, lifted and rolled between two rollers;
  • Increases blood and lymphatic circulation;
  • Breaks down water pockets responsible for the skin’s dimpled appearance;
  • Softens the fibrous adhesions responsible for the skin’s pitted appearance.

Infrared light 900 nanometers:

  • Generates thermal action superior to 40 degrees Celsius on adipocytes;
  • Increases lipolytic activity by stimulating beta receptors;
  • Increases cellular energy as well as the skin’s repair and regeneration mechanisms;
  • Warms subcutaneous tissue, preparing them for Ultrasound and bipolar RF treatments.

The Photo-Pneumatic massage heads warm the subcutaneous tissues, making them more malleable. They stimulate local blood circulation and increase lipolysis. The photo-pneumatic function considerably improves the appearance of cellulite.

1 MHz Ultrasound:

  • This specific frequency is the only one that delivers dual action: it inhibits the Alpha receptors, responsible for storing fat (lipogenesis), while stimulating the Beta receptors, to induces lipolysis by increasing norepinephrine secretion which stimulate the natural elimination of fat.
  • High speed vibrations (1 million vibrations per second);
  • Generates thermal action superior to 50 degrees Celsius on adipocytes;
  • Reduces the amount of localized and hard to eliminate fat deposits, skin dimpling as well as the circumference of treated areas;
  • Improves silhouette and skin texture.

Bipolar Radiofrequency:

  • A technology that is exclusive to Silhouet-Tone. Safe and painless, this technology only delivers thermal energy to the deep sub-cutaneous tissue, with no risk of burning or discomfort.
  • Electromagnetic energy;
  • Significantly firms the dermis and deep subcutaneous tissue in a gradual and controlled manner;
  • Reshapes the silhouette by improving the skin’s firmness and regularize the skin’s superficial and deep relief;
  • Reduces fat deposits through successive thermolipolysis.

The fat cells are subjected to an assault from three types of heat inducing technologies, dramatically increasing the elimination of fat. The compounded thermal action is much greater than each one on its own.

Needle Free Mesotherapy:

  • Electroporation is used to help powerful lipolytic products that have a greater molecular weight penetrate through the cell membrane;
  • The percentage of product penetration is 65-95% vs. traditional galvanic current which is limited to 3-10%;
  • Significantly improves results of other treatments.

The Lumicell Wave 6 system consecutively treats both the subcutaneous and adipose layers in one session.
