What is Myofascial Cupping?

Myofascial cupping is an extension of other myofascial release therapies which treat skeletal-muscle immobility and pain by releasing contracted muscles, improving blood and lymphatic circulation, and stimulating the stretch reflex in muscles.

The cupping therapy uses vacuumed cups on the body, combining compression and negative pressure when applied to the tissue being treated. This method is typically easier to tolerate in areas of restriction making it the ideal treatment for chronic injuries and restoring mobility.

Myofascial cupping has its origins in traditional cupping methods with a few modern, scientifically-informed changes. Traditional cupping actually dates back to ancient Egyptian, Chinese, and Middle Eastern cultures. One of the oldest medical textbooks in the world, theĀ Ebers Papyrus, describes how the ancient Egyptians were using cupping therapy in 1,550 B.C.E!

Myofascial cupping and traditional forms of cupping differ through a number of notable reasons. Firstly, whereas traditional cupping works through the strategic placement and parking of the cups along the meridian pathways, Myofascial cupping aims to directly treat the affected, targeted tissues. Myofascial cupping also leaves little to no markings, whereas traditional forms tend to leave large unsightly round, bruise like markings which can last weeks. Finally, massage is incorporated throughout the Myofascial cupping treatment.
